LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN
“In a world accelerated by technology, knowledge transfer means turning research into the capacity to drive transformation”
PROF. FRANCESC TORRES TORRES
RECTOR OF THE UPC AND CHAIRMAN OF CIT UPC
In 2025, the world experienced a new technological acceleration. Generative artificial intelligence became established as a cross-cutting tool; cybersecurity became a strategic priority for companies and institutions; quantum computing, new energy technologies, advanced materials, robotics and digital technologies continued to open up scenarios of opportunity and, at the same time, complexity. In this context, the capacity to transform scientific and technological knowledge into useful, reliable and applicable solutions is more necessary than ever.
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) plays a fundamental role in this transformation. As a public technological university, we generate knowledge in key areas for economic and social progress in which research can become innovation. But our responsibility does not end with generating knowledge; it is also our duty to bring it to companies, public administrations and organisations that must respond to the major challenges of our time.
In this journey, CIT UPC carries out an essential task. It acts as a bridge between the University’s research groups and the real needs of the productive sector. It identifies opportunities, connects teams, promotes projects and facilitates collaborations that enable research to be turned into new products, processes, services and activity models. This role is especially relevant at a time when innovation is no longer just a factor of competitiveness, but also a condition for moving towards a more sustainable, resilient and knowledge-based economy.
This report presents an overview of this collective activity. The projects, partnerships and results featured in it reflect the UPC’s capacity to place its scientific and technological talent at the service of companies and society as a whole. They are also the result of the commitment of our research groups and centres, and of the trust placed in the University by all the organisations that see it as a partner for innovating, growing and addressing complex challenges.
At the UPC, we will continue to promote technology transfer as one of the most valuable expressions of our public mission. We will do so with a spirit of service, technological ambition and the conviction that knowledge, when shared and applied, becomes a transformative force.
CIT UPC FOUNDATION
THE UPC AND THE TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC) is a public institution dedicated to research and higher education in the fields of engineering, architecture, sciences, and technology, and it is one of the leading polytechnic universities in Europe.
Since its founding, UPC has been institutionally committed to technology transfer and supporting the creation of companies and patents. CIT UPC is a strategic initiative of the University, aligned with the world’s leading technological universities. UPC’s research model consists of creating technology based on science and offering technological solutions to the productive system based on knowledge.
This long-standing commitment explains why the UPC highlights the University’s position in several rankings such as the Scimago Institutions Rankings 2026, which recognises the UPC as the leading Spanish university in innovation, and the top Ibero-American university in the field of Engineering, in Computer Science, Mathematics, and in Building and Construction; THE World University Rankings 2026, where it stands out in the Industry area and especially in the Patents indicator, with 98.5/100; the Leiden Ranking 2025, where the UPC is the leading university in Spain in the number of scientific publications in collaboration with industry, in the fields of Physics and Engineering, and Mathematics and Computer Science; and the CYD Ranking 2026, where it achieves the highest performance in private funds, publications with companies, patents granted per professor, patents with companies, licensing income, spin-offs, and publications cited in patents.
CIT UPC OBJECTIVES
Building on high-quality research, the UPC’s research groups and centres carry out significant activity in the field of technology transfer with companies, offering them technological and innovative solutions based on scientific output and frontier research.
On this basis, the objective of the CIT UPC Foundation is to contribute to the economic and social development of Catalonia through knowledge transfer, acting as a bridge between global science and the technological needs of companies. Given the available critical mass and the capacity and variety of distinctive knowledge held by the UPC’s research groups and centres, we offer solutions to complex technical challenges that require cross-disciplinary knowledge.
We work to be an essential agent and benchmark in southern Europe in research, technology and knowledge-based transfer, that is, in innovation. We want to provide added value and help improve the competitiveness of the companies that place their trust in us. We are committed to the goal of bringing more and better technology to the market, in order to transform knowledge into marketable technologies that generate impact.
